Keep in mind this is plastic. I tried finding out what it was made out of and was disappointed to see it is completely made of plastic, except for the locking mechanism. It is heavy duty plastic though. I tried to break a modem made out of this plastic, and it would take a lot of brute force to break it open. However, screwdriver to the hinge might do it too. It is useful for light duty. For example, you can give this to your kids, but dont use this like a home safe. This is useful when it comes to deterring someone from stealing your stuff but it will not prevent someone who is set on robbing you. It's purpose is to prevent someone from swiping something if they saw it in the open. If you go to the gym, this would be something nice to use incase someone opens your locker; they will see this locked to the locker and stop right there. This review is from: GunVault NV300 NanoVault with Combination Lock (Tools & Home Improvement) I purchased the Gunvault Nano Vault NV300 to store my handgun in my SUV whenever I have to enter "gun free" zones such as banks, schools, airports, sports arenas or government offices among others. This gun perfectly stores several of my handguns such as an HK USP Compact, Walther P99, Smith and Wesson 642 revolver, Glock 26 and Ruger LCP as well as my spare mag. The safe has a security cable that I have attached to my seat frame so that a thief cannot take the safe with him in case of burglary. Also, the safe is very well constructed, the dials are easy to manipulate despite my large fingers, it is very simple to configure your own password and the cable is long enough to pull the safe from underneath the seat and operate on your lap whenever needed. This safe was built to hold compact and sub-compact guns so it will probably not hold large handguns such as full size Glocks, M&P's, 1911 and others. If you have a small or medium handgun then this is the right safe for you!!! It's also somewhat useful for home storage if you don't have a proper safe, and are just looking for something to keep curious children and adults from a gun. I wouldn't think of it as a substitute for a real gun safe, though; the lock isn't strong enough, and could be defeated by a hammer. It's also not a good choice for keeping a pistol at hand if you might need to quickly retrieve it- the combination dial is tiny and hard to read in dim light. But considering the price, it's still a good value for its intended use. As for the smell that bothers some owners, there's a bit of a naphthalene (mothball) odor, but very little leaks out when the box is shut. Anyway, I suspect that the naphthalene is there for a reason- it's a good rust preventive. Would not deter a real thief but that is really not what this is for. Likes: -Love the slim size...its all you need. Other products are too bulky. Would fit a handgun perfect, sub-compact or compact, or up to a 4.5" barrel model like a Sig 226. -Perfect for home (bedside dresser say) or car (will fit under a seat) -The construction is fairly good, especially for the price. Ok but not Great: -Lock is ok but nothing super-great. -The foam does smell a little but that is not unusual for this kind of foam, I just left mine outside for a few days to air out (best is where there is breeze), and it worked out. Besides, you could always replace it with anything you want. Dislikes: -none So I give this 5 starts for size, construction, and especially for value... This review is from: GunVault NV200 NanoVault with Key Lock, Fits Full Size 1911 Style Pistols (Tools & Home Improvement) The Nano vault NV200 is sturdy, compact and provides a safe manner to transport guns in states that require a locked container as well as keeping them out of the hands of minors and folks who don't know how to safely handle them. The included cable won't stop someone with bolt cutters from removing the gun from your car or house, but it will definitely challenge most other attempts. It can be breached, but not without significant time and effort. The vault is well made and finished. For the price, it is excellent. I use mine for legal baggage and car transport as well as "hiding" the gun safely close by in the evening or while traveling. The only way to improve this would be to offer a model with an electronic keypad to reduce the likelihood that someone would find the keys and open the case. The first thing I did was smell it after I opened it up and I didn't really detect any obscene odor as many have reported. It had a faint smell like spray paint, but nothing that was unbearable. Regardless, this safe was exactly what I needed for travel and storing my firearm when unable to carry it. As a side note, I noticed that this safe also has the ability to be bolted down securely as well.
